Der C230 verwendet einen Induktionsofenund misst Kohlenstoff durch Infrarotabsorption.Die Infrarotquelle (IR) besteht aus Nichromdraht, der durchWiderstandserhitzung auf 8500 °C erhitzt wird. Die IR-Quellestrahlt sichtbare Energie sowie alle Wellenlängen des Infrarotspektrums ausZur Beschreibung kann Kohlendioxid verwendet werden; für die Schwefelerkennung gilt das gleiche Prinzip.Kohlendioxid absorbiert IR-Energie bei einer bestimmten Wellenlängeinnerhalb des IR-Spektrums. Energie aus der IR-Quelle wird absorbiert,wenn das Gas durch die Zelle strömt, und verhindert so, dass sie den IRDetektor erreicht.Eine IR-Zelle wird sowohl als Referenz als auch zur Messung verwendet.Der Gesamtkohlenstoff in Form von Kohlendioxid wird kontinuierlich und gleichzeitig erfasst.Der anfängliche Referenzpegel oder die Basislinie für den Detektor wirdfestgelegt, indem Sauerstoff durch die Zelle geleitet wird, um restliche atmosphärische Gase auszutreiben.
